Dog Days of Summer
|
|
Sirius the Dog Star
|
Well, it's the proverbial "dog days of summer" named for Sirius, the "dog star", seen in the summer months. The ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. There is lots to do to keep cool and enjoy the outdoors in New York during these "dog days". Visit our gorgeous green park open spaces, glittering fountains, roof top pools, and outdoor cafes. Hotels and venues offer great rates and the city is a bit quieter though still as exciting. And of course the city will heat up quite a bit when my fellow Republicans arrive for a doggone good time! WOOF! --RuBy

New York has its concrete jungles and tar beaches but it also has the Central Park Zoo! Situated near The Plaza Hotel, guests can enjoy an outdoor cocktail party around the sea lion pool while enjoying a seafood bar of hors d'oeuvre. Have frozen margaritas with the polar bears and pina coladas with the monkeys. Or take a safari to the Bronx Zoo and look up at the giraffes and go nose to nose with the gorillas. How about a "Midsummer Night's Dream" at one of two award-winning Botanical Gardens? The Brooklyn Botanical Garden and the New York Botanical Garden offer unique spaces from Victorian Glass houses to Japanese Tea Gardens. And there's always the private penthouse "tar beach" Sky. You may remember Samantha from Sex in the City taking a skinny dip in their pool! So have a "cool" event while NYC sizzles! --Gigi Verkaik

The Terrace at the United Nations

Summer's here and that means lots of outdoor entertainment. The New York Shakespeare Festival treats theatergoers to free Shakespeare in the park at the open-air Delacorte Theatre. This summer it's Much Ado About Nothing. Or there's the frequent concerts at the Central Park Summerstage. On Friday morning watch some great performers at Rockefeller Center on NBC's Today Show and even get a chance to be seen on TV! Every Saturday and Sunday two live bands perform outdoors at the Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River. On Wednesdays, Union Square is host to a number of concerts, children's book readings, dance presentations and the "theatre" of Union Square's fabulous farmers' market. --Tom Borchard

New Yorkers love their outdoor venues, especially those where they can have a cocktail and enjoy a delicious meal! Rock Center Café is the perfect place for those who want to be in the middle of it all while dining under the stars. Barolo has one of SoHo's largest and leafiest outdoor patios. Style mavens flock to it, day or night, to relax and enjoy the delicious Northern Italian fare. Get away from the hustle and bustle of Times Square by wandering over to Barbetta where the back garden, with its fountain and lush greenery, provides an Italian oasis. No trip to New York would be complete without a day in Central Park. Enjoy a cool drink and a light bite by the lake at the Boat House Café. Nothing beats sitting in the sun with a scrumptious concoction while the row boats move lazily on by! --Sarah Gippin

Ahhhh..."summer in the city!" Offer your guests a group bicycle ride through Central Park- one of the most beautiful parks in the world. With an expert guide, they can explore the flora and fauna while burning off those carbs. For a more relaxed pace, try a walking tour or a bit of boating in Central Park Lake. Or for the more adventurous, kayaking in the Hudson is an ideal way to take in Manhattan's stunning skyline. If you are planning an activity for landlubbers, discover the city in an outrageous scavenger hunt and photo safari, designed to foster creativity, interaction and healthy competition. How about challenging your guests to the flying trapeze along the Hudson River? Stimulate their team spirit and camaraderie as they swing and soar through the air with the greatest of ease. --Stephanie Margulies
