Up in Central Park was the name of a hit Broadway musical of 1948. In 2009 New Yorkers can say Up in High Line Park and mean it. Literally. In the ever trendy Meat Packing District a new city park is being raised above its cobbled stone streets. An abandoned, elevated railroad track running between 34th Street and the Village is being converted to an urban promenade with river views and skyscraper vistas. The 1.45 mile park called the High Line is sure to be the new hot destination for tourists and New Yorkers alike. One of the most recognizable buildings in the Meat Packing District is the Standard Hotel, situated directly over the High Line. Developer Andre Balazs, owner of the Mercer Hotel here in New York and Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, built the 337-room Standard atop and straddling the High Line at West 13th Street. Easily recognizable from miles around, The New York Observer calls it “the most unusual and significant New York building in years.” And the view looking out is even better: every room offers stunning views of either the Hudson River or the New York skyline. Chelsea Market is an enclosed, urban food court, modern art gallery and shopping mall located in the heart of the bustling Meat Packing District. The historic building was formerly the Nabisco factory where the Oreo cookie was invented and produced. With ever-changing art installations intensifying the exposed brick space, the anchor stores include Chelsea Market Baskets, Manhattan Fruit Exchange, 202 by Nicole Farhi, Amy's Bread, and Buddakan. Other treasures such as the Fat Witch Bakery, The Lobster Place, Frank's Meat, Eleni's Bakery and Chelsea Thai are not to be missed. The developers of Chelsea Market have encouraged a symbiotic relationship among their tenants with the vendors supplying the nearby restaurateurs with fresh ingredients. Don’t be surprised to find Lidia Bastianich squeezing the tomatoes or chef superstar Mario Batali double checking the gills of a fish for freshness. This playful piece is about three female employees who turn the tables on their tyrannical boss and find romance in the end.
