| Chocolate Valentine in New York | Briggs Staff in Florence, Italy | |||||
Who can make the sun shine? The Candy Man can!" When you think chocolate, you think of Belgium, Switzerland and Italy's famous Perugina Baci. Well, New York has a sweet center all of its own! Artesian chocolatiers have set up shop all over town. However with deference to these upstart parvenus, New York City always had a sweet tooth for chocolate. I still have a nostalgic craving for Barton's Almond Kisses, Barricini Carmel Clusters, Anne Page Samplers and Fox's U-Bet chocolate syrup. Even at $50 a pound, these designer candies will fly off the shelves on Valentines Day. Is this because chocolate is known as an aphrodisiac? Well then sweets for the sweet!! Don't forget to visit my Blog. |

| Jacques Torres Chocolate | Max Brenner Chocolate | |||||
Mr. Chocolate himself, Jacques Torres, of Food Network fame has done it again. He opened his first shop in Brooklyn's trendy Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). At his beautiful new SOuth of HOuston, Hudson Square shop, Jacques makes chocolate from the cacao beans he imports directly. Visitors can watch the entire process, created on vintage equipment that has painfully been restored. And on a cold winter day, he serves up steaming white and dark hot chocolate. |
My twin brother, Israeli chocolatier Max Brenner has arrived in New York with a massive Union Square location. Visitors to "The Bald Man's" store can expect chocolate in every conceivable form to satisfy their sweet tooth. His menu includes chocolate pizza, soup, fondue and even chocolate spaghetti! In the chocolate shop you can find the "Hug Mug" – a mug specially designed for the chocolate drinking ceremony, "Suckao." And best of all, you wont find any hair in the chocolate!
| MarieBelle New York | M&M's WORLD NEW YORK | |||||
Named after Maribel Lieberman, designer and founder, MarieBelle chocolates resemble semiprecious jewels displayed in beautiful Italian boxes (you can imagine the cost!) Everything about MarieBelle New York in SoHo is haute couture. At The Cacao Bar in the rear of the store, the atmosphere immediately brings to mind the cafes of Paris, Vienna, and Budapest. A grand chandelier hangs from the high ceiling, glinting in the many mirrors; the aroma of fresh-baked pastries draws you to the little tables where you can enjoy a leisurely cup of espresso or cappuccino. Here you can also choose between American-style or European-style Aztec Hot Chocolate, or order from a list of exotic teas. |
The chocolate war has come to Times Square in a big way! First to arrive was Hershey's Great American Chocolate Store where you can get a personalized Giant Hershey's Kiss. If kisses aren't enough, you can stroll across the street to the competition, the new M&M's World Store and make your own mix of colorful M&M's. To celebrate their opening, visitors donned bathing suits and immersed themselves in red, blue, green and yellow candy-coated colors to become human M&Ms. What color would you be and can a S'mores store be far behind?!
