Bernstein: The Best of All Possible Words    Maestro Leonard Bernstein
This fall many of New York’s cultural institutions will pay tribute to Maestro Leonard Bernstein who would have turned 90 this year. Bernstein (pronounced stine as in beer stein) was famous as a conductor, composer, author, teacher and celebrity. He was an inveterate New Yorker and his three major musicals all deal with the city: On the Town, Wonderful Town and West Side Story. A festive celebration entitled “The Best of All Possible Worlds” will be hosted by Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, City Center, the Paley Center and Jewish Museum. At the age of 24, Bernstein was catapulted to fame when he stepped onto the Carnegie Hall podium to conduct as a last minute replacement for an ailing Bruno Walter. Along with George Gershwin, he is a true American genius and New York City icon. Happy Birthday Lenny!

"Slightly to the Left of Carnegie Hall"    Tea & Symphony

For the past eighty years, many of New York’s defining cultural moments have taken place at the Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite—an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals. The Maestro often stopped into the Russian Tea Room for dinner after one of his many concerts when the NY Philharmonic’s home was Carnegie Hall. We all miss him and of course, Faith Stewart Gordon, the RTR previous gracious owner and host.

One way to visit Carnegie Hall without attending a concert is to enjoy a tour of this cultural marvel, built in 1891 by Andrew Carnegie, and performed in by such notables as Enrico Caruso, Isaac Stern, Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman. As a fitting coda for this musical afternoon, enjoy high tea in the East Room next to the museum collection of Carnegie Hall. Before you leave the auditorium, close your eyes and imagine Lenny lifting his baton for the down beat on that historic day he made his premiere.
