May 2006

"The flowers that Bloom in the Spring"     Your Briggs Team
The parks and gardens are in full flowering in May. Sidewalk cafes are filled with diners and the pathways of Central Park sport spirited rollerbladers and bicyclists. The city during this month is the scene of many theatre openings (to be eligible for the Tony Awards) and restaurant debuts (hoping for the NY Times 4 stars!). Some musicals will flourish while some will wither on the vine like Ring of Fire. Steakhouses continue to spring up in alarming bunches, all trying to block out the sun of the old steakhouse standbys. There are even some new blooms at Briggs - Danny, Dennis, Julie and Becky (try to pick out the "buds" in the staff photo to the right). Tra La!

Venues: Morgan Library and Museum      Tours: Big Apple Bargains
Occupying a newly enlarged, midtown Manhattan campus, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the Morgan Library & Museum reopened on April 29, 2006. The new jewel in the renovation is the atrium space next to the historic home of legendary financier and philanthropist, J.P. Morgan, Jr. The Morgan Library & Museum houses one of the world's greatest collections of artistic, literary, musical, and historical works. Included in its holdings are original scores by Mozart and Beethoven, drawings by Rembrandt and Rubens, medieval and Renaissance works, three Gutenberg Bibles, original manuscripts by Dickens and Twain, and five thousand year-old Near Eastern carvings.

Living in one of the most expensive cities in the world, New Yorkers love a bargain. Join the savvy New Yorkers who know where to shop for designer labels for less! This value-packed tour includes Century 21, where it's always bustling, and names are the game. At this downtown staple, you'll paw through the hodgepodge racks of designer items priced a lot lower than when they first hit stores. Then we run up to Canal Street to visit Pearl River Mart, a Chinatown institution for more than 30 years, which has taken SoHo by storm. Other places guests will be encouraged to search for steals are Macy's, Filene's Basement, Daffy's, Loehmann's, H & M and Syms. Alas, the mother of all bargain stores where it all began, Gimbel's Bargain Basement is long gone.
Restaurants: Bar Americain     Theatre: Drowsy Chaperone
Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay and restaurant designer David Rockwell have teamed up to create Bar Americain. The restaurant's name comes from the French term for an establishment with a full complement of hard liquor. It's also meant to signal the sensibility of a brasserie. The décor combines shades of orange and caramel to create a warm and inviting environment. Orange turns out to be more than just a detail, it is an homage to the sunny soul of Bar Americain and to the unsubtle, upbeat spirit of Mr. Flay's cooking. The bulk of the menu showcases regionally evocative dishes that allude to the television show "FoodNation With Bobby Flay."

The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving tribute to the care-free society musicals of the 1920's Cafe Society with its simplistic plots, sassy songs, and energetic dancing. However what make this musical a bit less jejune is the narration by a savvy Broadway Musical Theatre queen. "The man in the chair" as his character is known, who comments on the conventions and naivety of the the silly plot. This may be the sleeper musical of the season that could knock out The Jersey Boys as the other only serious contender for Best Musical Tony Award. Disney's Tarzan is going through major changes so it can swing into Tony nominations.

Mary Poppins: 11/16/06
