| The TONY Edition | West Side Tony | |||||
It isn’t easy being green! June brings the green leaves of summer and herald the end of the Broadway season with the Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall. Before air conditioning the theatre season ran from September to June closing down for the warm summer months. Of course theatre is year round now but the season is still marked by that climate change much like summer vacation from school. It’s been a record year for Broadway giving another meaning to green! Speaking of which, the new Henry Miller Theatre on West 43rd Street is the first “green” theatre with all up to date environmental innovations including waterless urinals! Even Times Square is going green with its new pedestrian mall where I have spied sunbathers basking in the glow of the Great Green White Way! And the winners are…. |

| Best Musical - Billy Elliot | Best Revival - The Norman Conquest | |||||
Reuniting the award-winning team behind the moving 2000 film and featuring the musical mastery of Sir Elton John, Billy Elliot shares the inspiring story of a poor, working-class boy who discovers his passion for dance as his family grapples with adversity. The three little Billy's won a joint Tony for Best Actor. David, Trent and Kiri stole the show with their boyish charm. The show also won for Best Book, Best Director, Choreography, Scenic, Lighting and Sound Design, and Orchestrations, Best Featured Actor went to Greg Jabara, who dragged up his wife for some reason; Sir Elton though lost the Music Award to Next to Normal. |
This roundelay of three interconnecting plays is set in the dining room, living room and garden of an English country house. The action is simultaneous, with each exit in one play turning out to be an entrance in another, as the stories follow six characters: Desperate lothario Norman attempts to seduce his sister-in-law Annie, charm his brother-in-law’s wife Sarah and woo his estranged wife Ruth, during a disastrously hilarious weekend of eating, drinking and misunderstanding. The best way to see this funny farce is all in one marathon day. Another comedy to catch is Exit the King starring Best Actor Tony winner, Geoffrey Rush along with co-star Susan Sarandon.
| Best Musical Revival - Hair | Best Drama - God of Carnage | |||||
The time seems right for this revival to resonate with its theme of freedom, peace and uninhibited sexuality and acceptance. With a score including enduring musical numbers like "Let the Sun Shine In," "Aquarius," "Hair" and "Good Morning Starshine," Hair depicts the birth of a cultural movement in the '60s as told through a tribe of hopeful hippies living in New York City while war rages in Vietnam. This show will have you, as well as the cast, dancing in the aisles. So if you are not a fan of interactive theater make sure you don’t get an aisle seat! Peace and love to all. |
Sad to see this “French” play won out over some good Amercian ones which seems a sad comment on the appreciation and cultivation of the arts in the United States. What happens when two sets of parents meet up to deal with the unruly behavior of their children? A calm and rational debate between grown-ups about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? Or a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime? Or a pretentious piece of Gallic foolery? Chacun á son goût.
