Under the Sea   Disney's The Little Mermaid

February's horoscope sign is Aquarius, the water bearer which may explain the confluence of water themed events coming up in NYC. Lest we forget, Manhattan is an island and is surrounded on all sides by water. At times this is hard  to believe, standing in the densely populated middle of Times Square. I never order bottled water at our fine restaurants either since we have the crystal clear pure waters of upstate New York flowing into our reservoirs. And it's a very green thing to do, too! Do you believe there are waterfalls in Central Park? And soon we will have waterfalls cascading off The Brooklyn Bridge. The waterfall art installation should not be missed this summer. I suspect it will rival the Gates Project in its artistic impact.

  Restaurants     Art

Enjoy the fruits of the sea at these two popular seafood establishments: Sea Grill and Oceana.  Sea Grill has the advantage of its location next to the shimmering water fountains of Rockefeller Center; rink side in winter and garden side in the summer. This very upscale eatery is the perfect culinary island for pre-theatre or an elegant business lunch. Oceana is the kingfish of seafood eateries in the city. This Neptune's delight has a secret wine cellar "under the sea", I mean downstairs It is a perfect cove for a board meeting or a small event.

Four giant waterfalls will be erected in New York for three months this summer in a public art project. The waterfalls, including one that will fall from the famed Brooklyn Bridge, are the brainchild of Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. The installation will cost $15 million, funded by private donations to New York's Public Art Fund. Three of the waterfalls will cascade into the East River and New York Harbor from free-standing scaffolding towers that Eliasson said were part of his artistic vision, mirroring the scaffolding towers that sprout up throughout New York. The falls will be in place from mid-July to mid-October.

  Hotels    Theatre

At sea on picking a boutique hotel?  In midtown The Dream Hotel features fantastical decor as if designed by Salvatore Dali. But the centerpiece of the hotel is a huge glass fish tank. You won't get seasick watching the fishies swim by at the popular lobby bar. The Maritime Hotel is downstream at the outer bank of the Meat Packing District. In the evening you can watch the chic lemmings swimming up and down stream to the many nearby trendy restaurants. You may wonder why the hotel has a series of portholes along its facade. Well it was once the headquarters of a Maritime Union before being converted into this popular night-spot hotel.

Disney's Little Mermaid is the seaworthy version of the famous animated cartoon based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The cast floats by on Heelys to great aquatic effect in the famous "Under the Sea" seaquence. "If you liked the movie, you will love the musical".

If you had to pick a playwright to curse the Devil, you probably couldn't do better than to pick the Irishman and living scribe, Conor McPherson. He ably takes up the charge here, rendering a play that, by all accounts, makes for a very compelling evening in the theatre. The basic plot  of The Seafarer involves two brothers and their drinking buddies who are joined by a mysterious, malevolent stranger for a fateful game of poker one icy Christmas Eve. Sailors Beware!
